Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has biodiversity in the form of plants, animals,
and minerals, one of which is used traditional medicine, namely Juwet leaf
ethanol extract (Syzygium cumini). The ethanol extract of Juwet leaves
(Syzygium cumini) is known to contain flavonoid compounds that function as
antibacterial. This antibacterial property made researchers conduct research on
Juwet leaves to inhibit the growth of Escherichia Coli bacteria.
In this test, the sample of Juwet leaves was randomly sampled from the
Juwet leaf population around one of the gardens in Tanjungrejo Village. Juwet
leaves were extracted for 3 days then evaporated using a water bath specific and
non-specific standardization parameters test and inhibition test by diluting them
into concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80%. The results of the inhibitory
power were then analyzed using One Way ANOVA.
The study of the standardized parameter test, the drying shrinkage test was
1.17%, water content (gravimetric) 0.02%, total ash content 2.15%, acid insoluble
ash content 1.15%, water soluble juice content 14.86 %, the juice content
dissolves in ethanol 9.13%. The test results are in accordance with the general
standard book of plant extracts and Materia Medika Indonesia. The results of the
test results for the antibacterial activity of the Juwet leaf ethanol extract on
Escherichia coli bacteria with a 5% concentration of 8.1 mm, a 10% concentration
of 12.9 mm, a concentration of 20% of 18.1 mm, a concentration of 40% of 23.6
mm, and a concentration of 80% was 30.8 mm and ciprofloxacin positive control
was 43.9 mm. ANOVA test obtained a significance of 0.000. It can be concluded
that the ethanol extract of Juwet leaves has the potential to be antibacterial against
Escherichia coli.
Key words: Juwet leaves, extract standardization, Inhibition power.
